Elo TouchSystems Introduces Tough New SecureTouch Touchscreen for High-Threat Environments

For Release

November 13, 1995

Fremont, Calif.

Elo TouchSystems, Inc. today introduced a new ruggedized touchscreen for use in bank ATMs, ticketing, and other public-access kiosks located in high-threat environments. The new SecureTouch touchscreen is vandal-resistant, withstanding repeated impact from heavy objects and continuing to operate despite scratches that would disable other touchscreens.

Performance—including clarity, resolution, and touch sensitivity—is not sacrificed to achieve increased ruggedness. Built on Elo’s proven, reliable IntelliTouch® technology, SecureTouch™ products deter vandalism while still providing a fast response to a light touch.

SecureTouch Takes A Beating

The new touchscreen is currently available in half-inch-thick annealed or tempered glass. In-house testing of a SecureTouch tempered glass touchscreen, targeted for extremely high threat environments, exceeds the specifications of the UL ball-drop test. The touchscreen withstands repeated impact from a one-kilo steel ball without breaking when dropped from a height of 51.5 inches. Elo TouchSystems can also custom-design SecureTouch systems using any type of glass a customer specifies.

“A SecureTouch touchscreen provides ruggedness without sacrificing performance,” says Michael Lewis, product manager. “It responds to a light touch just as rapidly as other IntelliTouch touchscreens do. Resolution is 4096 x 4096 touchpoints—the highest in the industry and a tenfold increase over previous systems. Clear glass construction with no coatings guarantees a clear, sharp image.”

The high durability of the SecureTouch touchscreen helps hold maintenance costs to a minimum. Because there are no coatings on the touchscreen, it’s not affected by the chips, scratches, and wear that disable other technologies. Because the technology is inherently stable and not subject to the drift associated with capacitive touchscreens, the need for frequent calibration is eliminated. The SecureTouch touchscreen is also stronger than its bonded counterparts. When bonded touchscreens break, the entire monitor must be replaced.

Several options are available for the SecureTouch touchscreen. The unit can be sealed against dust, splashed liquids and other contaminants, further increasing reliability. Multilayer security glass touchscreens will soon be available for use in applications requiring maximum protection against ingress. For applications involving sensitive information, ATM transactions for example, an optional privacy filter is available.

The new SecureTouch ruggedized touchscreen is currently available for 15- and 17-inch flat, square tube (FST) monitors. The flat touchscreen sits in front of the monitor, making it an easy add-on to kiosks, ATMs, ticketing machines, gas pumps, and other systems in high-risk environments. Integration is further enhanced by various controller interfaces, enabling SecureTouch touchscreens to operate in both bus and serial configurations.

“By extending proven IntelliTouch technologies into the SecureTouch touchscreen, we can offer a high-performance, ruggedized product at a good price,” says Lewis.

The SecureTouch touchscreen is available now. Pricing starts at $475 for a 17-inch touchscreen.
